So Much For Military Experience

“When the Great War came, Roosevelt occupied a position where he got to know only its pleasant consequences, enjoyed by those who do business while others bleed. I was only one of those who carry out orders, as an ordinary soldier, and naturally returned from the war just as poor as I was in Autumn 1914. I shared the fate of millions, and Franklin Roosevelt only the fate of the so-called Upper Ten Thousand.”—Adolph Hitler

THE CONGRESS: A Woman’s Conscience-June 12th 1950

The Senate’s only woman member stepped firmly into the congressional ruckus over Communists-in-Government last week and offered her colleagues some advice. “I think,” said Maine’s earnest, handsomely grey Margaret Chase Smith, “that it is high time for the United States Senate and its members to do some soul searching—for us to weigh our consciences —on the manner in which we are performing our duty to the people of America.”For the past six weeks, Republican Smith had searched her own soul and weighed her conscience. She had also talked things over with fellow members of a small group of Republican progressives in the Senate, and found that they agreed with her. She drafted what she called a “Declaration of Conscience,” and got them to sign it with her—New Hampshire’s Tobey, Vermont’s Aiken, Oregon’s Morse, New York’s Ives, Minnesota’s Thye, New Jersey’s Hendrickson. Thus armed she took the floor to make her case.
Forum of Hate. The noisy debate of the McCarthy charges, she said, had reduced the Senate “to the level of a forum of hate and character assassination sheltered by the shield of congressional immunity.” Added Senator Smith: “I am not proud of the reckless abandon in which unproved charges have been hurled from this [Republican] side of the aisle. I am not proud of the obviously staged, undignified countercharges that have been attempted in retaliation.

“The American people are sick and tired of being afraid to speak their minds lest they be politically smeared as ‘Communists’ or ‘Fascists.’ The American people are sick and tired of seeing innocent people smeared and guilty people whitewashed . . .”

Complacency Y. Calumny. It was a matter, she told the attentive Senate, that went beyond partisan politics. The Democrats could be justly accused of “complacency to the threat of Communism here at home and the leak of vital secrets to Russia through key officials of the Democratic Administration.” But, said Margaret Smith, “I don’t want to see the Republican Party ride to political victory on the four horsemen of calumny—fear, ignorance, bigotry and smear. In fact, I doubt if the Republican Party could.

“It is high time that we stopped thinking politically as Republicans and Democrats about elections and started thinking patriotically as Americans … It is high time that we all stopped being tools and victims of totalitarian techniques—techniques that, if continued here unchecked, will surely end what we have come to cherish as the American way of life.”

Teen sailor Abby Sunderland rescued by French fishermen

June 12, 2010

Californian teen sailor Abby Sunderland was rescued by French fishermen today after two days of battle with gale force winds and freezing temperatures while stranded on her stricken boat in the Indian Ocean.

The 16-year-old was said to be in good health when the Ile de la Reunion, a French fishing vessel, reached her battered yacht Wild Eyes in heavy seas earlier today.

Speaking outside the family home in Thousand Oaks, southern California, her father Laurence Sunderland said maritime authorities had contacted him to confirm the successful rescue operation, which took place at 7.45pm eastern Australian time (10.45 BST).

An hour before the rescue, an Australian rescue spotter plane overflew Wild Eyes and she fired off a flare to confirm her position.

The fishing ship then lowered one of its boats into the still-turbulent seas in order to bring her aboard.

Abby was forced to abandon her controversial round-the-world attempt when the 40ft ship’s mast snapped after it was pounded by wild weather midway between Africa and Australia on Thursday.

An international search and rescue mission was launched after emergency beacons on the yacht were set off and Abby’s family and support crew lost contact with the teenager.

The search for Abby involved Australian, US and French rescue authorities sending ships and a commercial airliner before she was eventually rescued approximately 2,000 nautical miles off the west coast of Australia.

Twenty hours after her distress call was broadcast an Australian search plane made brief radio contact, confirming that she was alive and well.

Australian taxpayers are expected to cover some of the cost of rescuing the American teenager, which is believed to have already cost more than $AU200,000 (£116,000).

Abby left the US in January in a widely criticised attempt to become the youngest sailor to circumnavigate the globe alone non-stop. She had to give up her chance at that record when she was forced to pull into a port at Cape Town, South Africa, for repairs to her boat.

Her plight has rekindled a debate about teenagers attempting to sail around the world, after an Australian teenager, Jessica Watson, returned home to a hero’s welcome after completing a similar trip last month.

Many people have criticised Abby’s parents for allowing the high-risk adventure, especially during the Southern Hemisphere’s winter months.

The man who built Wild Eyes said he thought that Abby had never been ready to make such a trip.

“This boat is bigger and faster than Jessica Watson’s boat. In Abby’s case she wasn’t physically or mentally strong enough to handle a 40-ft boat in those winter storm conditions,” said Queensland boat builder Jon Sayer.

Australian round-the-world yachtsman Ian Kiernan also criticised Abby.

“I don’t know what she’s doing in the southern Indian Ocean in the middle of the winter,” he said. “We need adventurers but adventurers who do foolhardy things and put their rescuers at risk, it should not be allowed.”

Abby’s family have defended her adventure, saying that as a lifelong sailor she was as well prepared for the journey as anyone could be. Her brother successfully circled the globe last year when he was about the same age.

Saturday News….

Not much….planning on a bike ride today up to Brents Deli for lunch in Westlake Village and then maybe a swim over at Marias. Waiting to hear from our good friend Scott on some business…some of it very cool and some of it pure chicken-shit…I’ll do some writing again this weekend…If I’ve gotta keep breathing the same air as these blood-sucking suits, I’ll get stuck in a puke loop. Going on the air and doing my show is one thing..that’s fun..getting off the air and taking a whiff of the business side can make you pass out from the stink..Honest to God…So the idea is to keep moving and keep earning in a lot of other ways…..

Show Log For Friday, June 11, 2010

It’s Abby Sunderland night on the Phil Hendrie Show. First off, high school teacher Vernon Dozier doesn’t believe a girl has the strength to sail around the world…He doesn’t think women are this inferior but he uses a comparison between humans and monkeys to say that men are humans in terms of ability and women are monkeys. “Sure, once a monkey gets near Africa he’ll realize he’s near home and make a run for it but that’s about it…” Justin McCelroy, 17 year old student from LA Canyon High School believes Abby Sunderland is trying to make other teens look lazy and disorganized by attempting the solo sail around the world. “She’s just trying to suck up to the adult political establishment. Other teens are dealing with global warming and meanwhile she’s bobbing up and down, doing her nails and waiting for the French navy to bring her breakfast..” Joran Van Der Sloot joined Phil for an “As You Like To Hear them” interview.
