Portland Logs at Tucson Tequila – September 24, 2012

Phil discussed the debris heading toward the California coast from the Japanese tsunami while Robert and Bud specuulated as to why certain things wash up on Hawaiiin shores ("A food container would but a bus is too big." ??) Margaret blamed the United States for the tsuami debris because we "shouold have known it would happen and warned the Japanese to tie their boats up better." Jay Santos of the Citizens Auxiliary Police told Phil that the CAP was going to freeze Libyan assets. How? By basically mugging any Libyan diplomat they see walking down the street. "How much you got on you?" Margaret Grey, in a tour de force, closed the show with "Cay Sera Sera", "Paranoid" backed by Frank Grey's band Frank's Way and "Highway to Hell."

Phil got sidetracked early when a reference he made to Margaret being "bug-eyed" was interpreted by her to mean "anal." She then brought up the song "You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet" by BTO with it's line "she looked at me with those big brown eyes" ("Most women heard that as singular, Phil...'big brown eye' she said") as another offensive example. Vernon Dozier was on the phone at the time and said that the song, because the singer mockingly stutters throughout, was painful for him as he had a stutter as a teenager, although now, he said "I bust it out at parties and it's a big ice-breaker." Jeff Dowder was going to give us a report on the new iPhone 5, but claimed to have lost his notes "on the 5...not the iPhone 5. I lost my notes on the 5, the I-5." That prompted an argument about what freeways are called.

Phil launched into another scathing critique of the radio industry only to have Margaret tell him to cool it lest he "wind up like Howard Beal," the character in the film 'Network' that got shot at the end of a TV newscast for bad ratings. Only Margaret thinks Phil will be offed by industry executives who try and make it look like a crazed listener did it. Phil talked at length about the Muslim community in France being upset with more satirical cartoon renderings of the Prophet Mohammed. Margaret interjected again about Phil's life not being worth a plug nickel if he starts getting into the middle of this "Slam thing." She then told Phil she loved France and as proof sang the French national anthem making up her own words, "a Grey family tradition." One of the lines had to do with the Hunchback of Notre Dame and French bread.

Phil introduced tonight a new in-studio contributor, Margaret Grey. Margaret will provide, according to Mr. Hendrie, a "journalists point of view, one decidedly liberal and intelligent." On the show tonight, however, Margaret immediately began arguing with Robert and Bud about microphone time and then tore into guests Bobbie Dooley and Larry Grover. At one point she began to cry and demanded to speak with her husband. At another point she put her hands around Bud's throat and almost "choked him out."
