Show

Last night it was Austin Amarca talking about his home state of Texas and its new schoool curriculum emphasizing more traditional views of Texas and America. He’s particularly proud of the fact it will teach how much more important Sam Houston was than Thomas Jefferson, how hanging and firing squad were superior capital punishmnts methods and how Texas was almost one of the original colonies. in the second hour it was Art Griego extolling the strength and grit of the Southerner. If this oil leak had to happen anywhere, better it happen in the souith where the people are “used to having their asses kicked” and can live, if need be, in trees and river beds and subsist on roots and rodent meat.

being able to see this is an honor and a first time deal. Phil could do this show alone. Isn’t it ironic when his engineer is funnier than his producer?

    Yeah, seriously.

FWIW, I laughed my ass off at the bit where Art Griego says southerners are used to getting their asses beat. LOL, comedy gold.

You have a BSP? Interesting. Phil is at the bank right now, laughing his ass off at your post.

Phil IS the asshole. Seems like no one will work for him for long… so I guess Mr. KNOW-IT-ALL will need to learn how to do everything himself…BECAUSE no one is good enough!!!!

    FUCK YOU PHIL !!!!!

Something needs to happen. Something, I don’t care what. What happened to the days when Phil would crack himself up regularly over the air? It happens every 9 shows it seems these days.

Agreed on Janice Ungaro, who I think is a stand-up comic in her own right in Canada. I always wondered why Janice left. A few stray puzzle pieces: Janice left. I thought Schaeffer, the engineer or call screener, was good also. He left too. Phil’s goodbye speech in 2006 contained a litany of coded and overt apologies to people he had treated badly in the past. Phil doesn’t appear to like his current engineer/producer or whatever Jason is. (Jason is quite bright, but he does not really share Phil’s sense of humor and is too young to share anything like a similar worldview, and they are not on a wavelength at all.) Seems like Phil can’t get the help he might want into the studio. Why do you suppose that is? Could it have anything to do with the truism that no one who is accomplished, has a track record and real comedic talent and the self-esteem to go with it, and is in their right mind, would want to be subjected to a colicky stream of verbal abuse coming into their headphones (and now with the webcasts, out to the world)?

I have two suggestions for Phil:

    1) If he is going to keep that numbnut Jason he should let BSP members hear his ass chewings instead of turning down the mike.

    or

    2) Have Jason do homework and listen to the Phil Henrie archives starting way back when Phil was funny so he can have some sort of clue what Phil is and how his show works. Phil doesn’t have a chance with Ralph and Jason. He deserves better.

I think Jason needs to be replaced.

@Jim Briggs What if Phil can’t get another producer and is under contract to use that Rantz? He is a TRN empoyee, not a Siempre (Phil’s company) employee.

Maybe he should have Rantz be a figurehead and hire a more appropriate producer via his own company. A bit redundant, but Rantz isn’t cutting it and it’s painfully obvious.

I agree with a lot of what is said here. Certainly Phil is the genius as the writier and performer. However, during the period where Janice (sp?) was producing it seemed like the show was just better. She seemed to get Phil’s ideas and was able to build on them. Jason just does not seem to get it.

I also agree with the "real" studio v. "home studio" remark. I’m not in the radio biz, but I have always heard this too.

No matter how you cut it, It gives the show a real bad….tone. You can tune into the middle of the show and immediately tell there has been backstage drama.

It’s hard to be funny when you’re pissed off all the time.

yea i find it funnier when you could hear phil trying not to laugh and hear is old producer or engineer laughing in the background

I’ve heard many people ask Howard Stern why he insists on doing his show from a "real" studio with a "real" studio environment rather than phoning it in from home and he always insists that it just doesn’t work. I realize that it’s an entirely different show but I still think there’s definitely something to be said about having everyone together.

The set of artists who produce excellent work is greater than the set of asshole artists who produce excellent work. Therefore being an asshole is not necessary for excellence. That said, it’s a contract, a two-way street. I happen to like the show, always have. Phil never did anything to me except make me laugh, and once in a while, make me think. People who get involved with him intimately in business obviously see benefit in doing to, otherwise they would be doing something else.

Over the years Phil has gone through a number of producers. Part of it is, IMO, his personality, which takes a special kind of person to work with. But when I say that it’s not like I’m blaming Phil; he has a product to deliver to his customers, and not only that but he actually gives a crap about the quality of his product, so when things don’t go the way he thinks they should he has every right, IMO, to tell the person responsible what’s what.

Thanks for the great show Phil and try not to give yourself a coronary over your staff. =D

I get off on Phil losing it and blasting Jason. I’m disappointed when there’s no fireworks. I can’t wait for Jason to screw up and get his ass chewed out. Is there a way to fast forward to the Jason parts?

yea i agree i think his shows are great when he comes in and says I capitalize the I have a idea for tonight. i also think i have no clue would it not be to his advantage to have his engineer and producer in the same studio? probably a good thing they are not might be a killing.

Very well said Paul. Jason just sounds like he does not care. Not once have I sensed that Jason feels the slightest sense of urgency or personal investment in this show. I have to admit that at first I thought Phil was being a complete a-hole, but after watching these videocasts for months now, I’m sorry, this Jason guy brings absolutely nothing to the table.

One of my favorite moments was when Phil was asking for an Hispanic name to give to a maid he wanted to allude to for one of his characters (I can’t remember what character/show but it was recent) and Jason shouted "Francesa!" with a giggling tone that sounded as if he thought he was really jiving with Phil now. Phil just winced at the poor kid’s ignorance and groaned "No, that’s Italian." LOL! How on earth does someone so ignorant become an "executive producer"? Then Phil came up with "Agnes," which was absolutely perfect for the context of the bit.

I really don’t want to sound like a jerk here and I am certain that Jason doesn’t need anyone else beating him up, but my God, I just can’t take this anymore. I am a Phil fan since 2004 and yet even I feel as though I am watching my favorite radio show go down in flames night by night. It’s not that bad every night–not by any means–but shows like this have me convinced that Phil is being let down by his staff.

Well, I’ve produced radio shows….never hosted a radio show. Been on the losing end of the battles just like Jason and Ralph have. And, because Phil’s show is so unique, I’d think it takes a certain skill set most radio producers in this day and age do not have.

The business rewards the good producers and the lousy ones almost the same. As Phil said last night, that’s why they and the talent are driving the crappy cars, while the salespeople who wait for the phone to ring drive the BMW’s.

there were alot of the f bombs going off. and yes you are right jason has no sense of humor not at all. his ideas suck. i know phil writes all of his stuff. but there are times when ideas about the bit would help him alot. jayson has no clue. i think i read where phils last producer had some comedy writing background

phil ask about what question that he wanted jason to answer. then he hit the switch and started tearing a new ass. basically what we didnt hear was phil told him "he didnt want argue with him no more" got real pissed and then said "forget put a tape in", "i am not gonna put up with this put a tape in this last hour" and then cut feed off

Yeah I was wondering why this was a two-hour show. Man, I don’t know how Jason takes this night in and night out. If that kid has the slightest scrap of self-confidence left after the past couple of months it’s a miracle. I also don’t quite understand how he has become an "executive producer." After watching these videocasts for months now it has become abundantly clear that the kid has absolutely no sense of humor whatsoever and spends entirely too much time sipping probiotic shakes at the local wheat grass bar with his fellow metrosexual Vampire Weekend roadies to have any clue what passions move the minds and souls of Average Americans. I don’t get it.
